“Art” meant the same thing as the Greek word
techne, or in English “skill”, a sense that has survived in phrases like “the art of war”, “the art of love”, and “the art of medicine.”
Art history is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts; that is genre, design, format, and style. The study includes painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, furniture, and other decorative objects.

25John Constable (1776-1837)
John Constable, one of the greatest landscape painters, was
born in Sufford, on June 11, 1776. He was the son of a wealthy miller. He began to take interest in landscape painting while he was at grammar school.
In 1799 Constable entered the Royal Academy School in London. He was the first landscape painter who considered that every painter should make his sketches direct from nature, that is, working in the open air. Constable's art developed slowly.

27Constable was a realist. He put into his landscape cattle, horses,
the people working there. He put the smiling meadows, the sparkle of the sun on rain, or the stormy and uncertain clouds. The most notable works of Constable are "Flatford Mill", "The White Horse", "The Hay Wain", "Waterloo Bridge", "From Whitehall stairs" and others.
In England Constable never received the recognition that he felt he was due. The French were the first to acclaim Constable publicly. His influence upon foreign painting schools has been powerful. Constable may truly be considered the father of modern landscape painting.

(Thomas Gainsborough)
(1727-1788)
(Thomas Gainsborough)
(1727-1788)
English painter and draftsman. The largest representative of
the English school of portrait painting of the XVIII century. Systematic art education is not received. He began his work as a landscape painter. Early landscapes and portraits of Gainsborough are marked by the sensitivity and spontaneity of perception of nature, somewhat naive poetic charm ("Portrait of R. Andrews with his wife", circa 1749, Tate Gallery, London).
The mature style of the artist was formed by the 70s. under the influence of A. van Dyck and A. Watteau. The portraits of Gainsborough, often placed against the background of a soft, idyllic landscape, are characterized by emotional sophistication, reverent spirituality and poetry, subtle shades of the movement of feelings.

The Blue Boy (The Huntington Library, San Marino L. A.)
34Women's and youthful portraits of Gainsborough (Blue Boy, circa 1770, Huntington
Gallery, San Marino, USA; Portrait of a Lady in Blue, late 70s, ET), as well as paired and family portraits in which the artist reveals the subtle spiritual closeness of people ("Artist's Daughters", about 1759, and "Morning Walk" - a portrait of W. Hellett with his wife, 1785, National Gallery, London). Deep humanity is inherent in his images of peasant children ("Village Children", 1787, Metropolitan Museum).
36Gainsborough has a virtuosity of ease; a thin chiaroscuro play, the
dynamism of small flowing multi-colored brush strokes give his paintings a feeling of changeability and airiness. The artist is especially fond of cold blue tones, shaded by soft mother-of-pearl tints of colors. Among the drawings of Gainsborough, the main place is occupied by landscapes and scenes of peasant life, full of feelings of poetry and variability of nature.
