Situated at the junction of sea, river and land-based routes, Saint Petersburg is Russia’s gateway to Europe, its strategic center closest to the countries of the European Community.
Inland waters occupy about 10% of the city area.

The total area of the city (together with areas under municipal jurisdiction) – 1439 km2.

The population is 4,571,100 people (the estimate of Petrostat as of 1.01.2007). Saint Petersburg is the second largest city of the Russian Federation (after Moscow).

A package of program measures to stabilize and develop the overland public passenger transport system of Saint Petersburg up to 2015 (the Resolution of the Government of Saint Petersburg of 26.12.2002, №65).
The Program for the Development of subway (underground) and other kinds of high-speed out-of-street transport in Saint Petersburg up to 2015 (the Resolution of the Government of Saint Petersburg of 25.04.2002, №20).
