С свинцом в груди лежал недвижим я;
Лежал один я на песке долины;
Бог знает чем была погружена;
И снилась ей долина Дагестана;
Знакомый труп лежал в долине той;
No, I'm not Byron; I am, yet,
Another choice for the sacred dole,
Like him - a persecuted soul,
But only of the Russian set.
I early start and end the whole,
And will not win the future days;
Like in an ocean, in my soul,
A cargo of lost hopes stays.
Who, oh, my ocean severe,
Could read all secrets in your scroll?
Who'll tell the people my idea?
I will or God or none at all!
(Translated by Yevgeny Bonver)
When my life is arduous,
If sadness freezes blood,
I say one prayer marvelous,
I learned it all by heart.
There's vigor unbelievable
In living words' accords,
And breathes unfamiliar
And holy charm in words.
A heart becomes not troublesome,
And doubts go awry,
And comes the truth and tears come,
And soul wants to fly.

The Prayer
(Translated by Yevgeny Bonver,
November, 2000)
***
We've parted, but I still retain
Your portrait resting on my breast:
It makes me happy once again
As a pale ghost of the past.
Enslaved by newer passions, I
Kept loving it the same; this way
Forsaken shrines keep being shrines,
And fallen gods still make you pray.

To***
We met each other once again,
But how much we've changed with years!..
As they passed joylessly away
To hide invisibly forever.
I seek old fire in your eyes;
I search my soul for old passions.
Oh, how you as well as I
Are crippled by this life's oppression!..
Translated by Yevgeniy Sokolovskiy
No, for I hope no longer,
And do not regret the past at all;
I seek freedom and repose, while longing
To obtain them in a sleep withal!
But it's not a deathlike sleep I crave for...
I would rather fall asleep, yet live,
For my dormant chest might keep its vigor,
For my dormant chest might mutely heave;
For I would with joy forever listen
To a gentle voice that sings of love,
For an oak tree, always green and blissful
Would caress me rustling from above.
Translated by Yevgeniy Sokolovskiy
1841
I love to jolt along a narrow country byway
and, slowly peering through the darkness up ahead
while sighing for a lodging, glimpse across the highway
the mournful trembling fires of villages outspread.
I love the smoke of stubble blazing,
heaped wagons on the steppe at night,
a hill mid yellow cornfields raising,
a pair of birch trees silver-bright.
With pleasure few have yet discovered,
a laden granary I see,
a hut with straw thatch neatly covered,
carved window shutters swinging free.
On feast nights with the dew descending,
I'll watch till midnight, never fear
the dance, the stamps and whistles blending
with mumbling rustics full of beer.
