Characters are often drawn from popular fiction in Japan, but recent trends have included American cartoons and science fiction. Favorite sources include manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, hentai and fantasy movies.
It is not unusual to see genders switched, with women playing male roles and vice versa.
Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centred around role play.

Most cosplayers create their own outfits. Many cosplayers therefore consider cosplay to be a form of Art and so consider themselves Artists, some in the more specific subcategory of Arts 'n' Crafts.

their own attributes. The high cost of purchase or manufacture of high quality costumes
at times acts as the main reason for delaying cosplay in Ivanovo.
