He was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein,

a town in South Africa. Tolkien's father was a bank manager. When he was 4 his father died and the family went to England. They lived in the country near Birmingham among green hills and valleys which the boy liked very much. After his mother's death in 1904 he was looked after by Father Francis Xavier who was a priest.

'Oxford Poetry ' in 1915, 'A Middle English Vocabulary' (1922) ‘The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses From the Red Book’ (1963) and a lot of scientific works on linguistics. Many children like his tales ‘Farmer Giles of Ham’ (1950) and ‘Smith of Wooton Major’ (1967). But we can surely say that ‘The Hobbit’ (1937) and his masterpiece ‘The Lord of the Rings’ (1954-1955) made Tolkien famous and popular all around the world.

Tolkien won few awards during his lifetime.
In April 1938

‘The Hobbit’ won a prize, awarded by the New York Herald Tribune, for the best children story of the season.
In 1957 ‘The Lord of the Rings’ won the International Fantasy Award at the 15th World Science Fiction Convention.
In 1972J.R.R. Tolkien was honored as a C.B.E. (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his contribution to literature, and also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters by Oxford University for his contribution to philology.

and his wife Edith are buried together in a single grave in the Catholic section of Wolvercote cemetery in the northern suburbs of Oxford.
