again. Paradise parrots are extinct. Extinction is forever. The main cause of extinction is the destruction of habitats. Today we have a greater understanding of the threats our wildlife faces than did the early settlers. Yet still we have created added threats such as urban and industrial development, pollution, and pet and fur trade. But, why save a species? Without a variety of species, the earth may not be inhabitable by humankind. Plants and animals help to maintain the chemical balance of the atmosphere.

High prices from overseas collectors encourage the smuggling of many unique and colorful Australian animals such as the golden-shouldered parrot.

Feral cats are found throughout Australia. They kill many animals including small mammals, birds, frogs, reptiles and insects. Cats threaten the only mainland population of bandicoot in the state of Victoria.

Foxes are partly responsible for the decline in numbers of brush-tailed bettongs, plains wanderers and other ground-dwelling animals. Introduced to Australia in the 1860’s, foxes now occur throughout most of Australia. Where they are absent, in Tasmania and tropical Australia, the loss of small mammals has been less.

Слайд 9THE KOALA
The koala is one of the best known and most

loved animals in Australia. Koalas live in lightly wooded areas containing suitable food. They are very fussy eaters, feeding almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves. Koalas seldom drink, as they obtain enough water from the diet of leaves.
The koala sleeps in a fork of a tree for most of the day and moves about and feeds at night. It is most active just after sunset.
The koala is often incorrectly called a “Koala Bear”. It is not related to the bear family at all, as it is a marsupial mammal, not a placental.
A koala’s average life span in the wild is about 12 years, but they have been known to live for over 15 years in captivity.

Слайд 11LAKE BAIKAL

Pollution is the greatest danger. Waste products of many kinds

are brought into the lake by rivers from cities and industries. When plant growing in the lake Baikal, they go down to the bottom. The same thing happens to plant life that falls into the water. There they decay.
The pollution of Lake Baikal is a great danger not only for fish, but for people too, especially for children. In many places swimming in its waters is impossible now because of the danger to their health.
Biologists think that Lake Baikal will take not less than twenty years to clean itself of undercayed wastes if all pollution is stopped now.

Слайд 12OUR ENVIRONMENT
My advice to all children and grown ups is to

recognize the importance of our planets natural systems and variety of life. We need to think about our part in the environment and how our actions, such as, our use of water, production of rubbish and energy consumption can directly destroy our wildlife and natural habitats.
