Australia is a fascinating country,
the “Land Down Under”.
Australia is

an island, a continent and a country. It’s the world’s largest island and its smallest (but oldest!) continent. It lies in the Southern Hemisphere, so everything there is the other way round. Summer starts in December, winter starts in June. So Christmas and New Year in Australia are celebrated in summer!

their “spirit ancestors” created the land and all forms of life on it. The Aborigines sing songs around campfires with the accompaniment of clapping sticks and the didgeridoo, their national instrument.

Art is very important to the Aborigines. For thousands of years they have painted stories from their Dreamtime on rocks and barks. The have also painted their bodies for ceremonies.

Canberra, the capital of Australia, is the newest city

of all. It was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, an American architect, in 1912, and became the capital in 1927.

Coober Pedy is a small town in South Australia, but it is known as the “opal capital of the world”. But it’s very dry and hot. So most people live under the ground in houses that are dug out of the rock. Aboriginal name Coober Pedy actually means “white man in a hole”.
