His life and work of
D.N. Kugultinov earned the right to be the voice of the people, face the people – as written about him Mikhail Dudin. His name is recorded in 1990, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (USA), Planet № 2296. He became a symbol of Kalmyk culture and poetry, forever inscribed in the history of mankind.
Among the eminent poets of the many nations composing the Soviet Union David Kugultinov takes his place alongside
Rasul Gamzatov of Dagestan, Mustai Karim of Bashkiria, Kaisyn Kuliev of Kabardino –Balkaria, and others as an outstanding poet of insight, feeling and artistic power.

When on March 13, 1922 in Houghton
Abganer Gahankin West ulus in the rural teacher’s family was born a boy, no one knew that his work would be «the sum of experiences of successes and failures, victories and defeats, of happiness and sorrow».
He springs from the people who gave him their language, traditions and aspirations, in whose life he is immersed, from whose world of experience he issues and then to be a poet combining the past and present, the hopes and passions, thoughts and feelings of a multitude of people.

When 20 years later,
David went back to the land where he was born ,he again returned to his childhood. He again felt the sharpness of the death of her aunt. She saved him from starvation, refusing from her piece of bread. He remembered the first children’s grief, when strangers carried away from the yard of their piebald mare, with which he firmly on friendly terms. He remembered material on the shirt, and the second volume of Capital Karl Marx – his first award for good study. Pioneer and Komsomol youth, when with friends on horses, they rushed into the steppe, carrying out the task of the organization. Слайд 5Make or break his life was a meeting with the teacher
Bata Mandzhievich Mandzhiev. Teacher of Russian language and literature of the secondary school No 1, ‘one of the most educated Kalmyk writer’, drew attention to the talented student. With his direct participation of the first book D. Kugultinov was born. 1940 was a truly meaningful to eighteen young men: was published his first book, he became a member of the ‘Writers Union and his works have already read the entire country’. They were placed in the anthology ‘Creativity peoples of the USSR’ (now known magazine ‘Friendship of Peoples’), in the book ‘Poetry of Kalmykia’, published in Moscow publishing house ‘Soviet writer’. In the same year Kalmykia celebrated the 500th anniversary of the epic ‘Dzhangar’. It was a national holiday, which was attended by well-known writers and scholars of the country. The young poet was able to communicate freely with those whose work he had recently studied at school.

The first verses of
D. Kugultinov were full of youthful purity and freshness: “Today the world is bathed in the spring./How to view”
The report at the 8th Plenum of the USSR Writers’ Union, which was held in Elista in connection with the 500th anniversary of “Djangar”, lyrical talent of D. N. Kugultinov noted as a phenomenon of a new talent in Kalmyk literature.
From the second year of teacher’s college D.Kugultinov joined the Red Army,the foreman,and the second lieutenant in a part of our troops.
Слайд 7The Great Patriotic War 1941-1945
War broke and upset all plans. A
promising second-year student of Pedagogical Institute worked as a war correspondent for newspaper which was producing on the front line. Frontline years added to his verse severe restraint. They appear characteristic of heroes “Dzhangar ‘sense of responsibility for his life, his homeland. The motif of the heroic vow becomes a major modeling intonation of his works. “Sreppe! If the terrible battle / chickened out myself tarnished; Steppe! If Dzhangara and Hongra / I desecrate names - / Blood in my pus develop, / Oh, steppe/ And diadaining me, / My body does not accept / in the bosom of his holy !”
1942-43. A member of the CPSU, a part of the troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front participated in the crossing of the Dnieper.
May 1944 – removed from the front for belonging to the Kalmyk people who were deported in December 1943 in Siberia.1944-45 –a teacher of automotive technical school in Biysk (Altai).
Слайд 8 The years of repression 1943-1957
This was followed by a
black date for the Kalmyks – December 1943. When in the spring of 1944 from the fronts began to shoot Kalmyk soldiers , Kugultinov was exiled in Siberia. The apparent injustice of this decision was painful for a war veteran and he wrote a letter to Stalin. The move cost him dearly – 23 year-old poet was behind the Arctic Circle. When arrested, “seized verses seven chapters of the poem, to ptotest1915282271 against the injustice done to the people.”
Norilsk №25 (nickel)factory,Norilsk Gulag (especial regime of the camp), the construction of the Norilsk airport these were places where D. Kugultinov had to work as an exile.

The life in
the Gulag became for him a kind of “university”
There he met many people with a “powerful” spirit, who helped him to survive, to cope with hash realities.
He learnt one main thing : not to give up and believe !
With the return of the rights of repressed peoples ( 1957)the first news of Kalmyk literature was the poem of D. Kugultinov “Height”, which was published in “Ogonek” magazine translated by V. Lugovskoy.
From this point for D. Kuguktinov begins a new life: study on the High literary courses of the Union of Writers. He plunges into literary life of the country. It gave him a powerful impetus to his talent.

Poetry D. Kugutinova began to sound in
many languages. He himself is the Soviet literature, going abroad. As a part of the Soviet writers’ delegation D. Kugultinov took part in the 7 Conference of the Association of Writers of Asia and Africa, which was held in Tashkent, he visited many countries and with people talking about their home country, read his poems in Tunisia and Algeria, India and the United States, Japan, China, Italy, Lebanon, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, etc.
Kugultinov created more than 40 books
that have come out in Russian, Kalmyk ,
Ukrain, Belarussian languages. The best
works have been translated into English,
Czech, Arabic, Japanese languages.

1967-awarded the State Prize
of Russia Federation for the book “Age”.1976- the State Prize of the USSR for the book “The Call of April”.1985- a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Kalmyk ASSR.
1988-1992 – a deputy and a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
In 1990 he was awarded the highest rank of the country – the Hero of Socialist Labor and was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Hammer and Sickle for achievements in the Soviet multinational literature development and an active social life, and the Center for minor planets (USA) has been registered planet number 2296 under the name ‘Kugultinov’. In 2000, he was awarded a diploma of the Russian Academy of Literature and a medal ‘Jealous education’ in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of AS Pushkin. In the same year he was awarded he highest award of the Russian People Association – Gold medal ‘Friendship of Peoples of Russia.’

1997-the Kalmyk publishing house published a two- volume of his selected poems in Kalmyk language.
2002 in Norilsk ,where he was detained in the Gulag, was published Collected works in three volumes.
June 17,2006 the People’s Poet of Kalmykia David Kugultinov died. He was 85. Kugultinov remains a suprimly interesting, profound and very modern poet and thinker. His poetry is in itself a significant fact of history.
In the day when I won’t see the sun,
I believe, being distressed and groaning,
Motherly, you will accept me
You ‘ll absorb my ashes, Kalmykia, native!
