Слайд 4Opinion poll
Rusty and unclean water seems to be the most important

ecological problem in our town.

In my street opinion poll, I asked town-dwellers the following question:
“What ecological problems does our town face?”

As you can see, most of residents aren’t satisfied with the quality of tap water.

Ivan:
Yes, water is very rusty in Zheleznodorozhny, especially in its central part (Proletarskaya, Majakovskaja streets for example), so it is necessary to buy and use filters, I think. Such water is not safe to drink.
Zolotko:
… our town draws its drinking water from the artesian chink which has too much minerals. The water stone is formed everywhere: in toilet, bathtub, dishes, on taps… Our town-dwellers’ common dicease is Kidney disorder because of salts in water .

Where do residents get their water?
I performed a street opinion poll

for this question. I got interesting results: most of the people know about the health risk causing by tap water, but many of them use it anyway. This carelessness will someday affect their health badly.
Most resident hope that the new administration if the town Zheleznodorozhniy will be successful in water protection program, and town officials will find enough funds to improve the quality of drinking water and in the near future the health of tap water will be at best.

About the iron in tap water.
So, as you can see, everyone

knows that tap water in the town of Zheleznodorozhniy contains high level of iron and mineral salts, that indicates health risk, and that’s why water sometimes has red color.

But did you know that there is more than one type of iron, which rusty tap water contains?
Ferrous iron is sometimes called clear water iron because it is in solution – you can’t see any color in freshly drawn water.
Ferric iron is sometimes called red water iron because in it’s oxidized form it will give water a rusty tint – even when freshly drawn.
Iron bacteria which is a live bacteria which feed on iron in the water and has a gelatinous residue deposited throughout your plumbing system. It usually detected best it the water closet of your toilet. You may even see floating clumps of iron bacteria on the surface of the water.

One of modern directions of clearing underground waters is the

biological way which is based on use of microorganisms. Iron bacteria is the most widespread among them. These bacteria "eat" iron, oxidizing it up to the "rusty" trivalent form. However, these bacteria is not dangerous to a human organism. Iron bacteria were the enemy of systems of water supply for a long time. For example, they can produce rust in the pipes in height up to 10 mm per year, which causes damage to the material of pipe. More than twenty kinds of iron bacteria are founded in various areas of our country by this time. Liquidation of iron bacteria consequences is requires significant material inputs.
Using biotechnology in water cleaning systems requires very high qualification of personnel and technics.

Слайд 10Doctor’s opinion
Sometimes tap water can contain heavy metals, among them lead

(Pb). Lead poisoning can cause permanent brain damage in serious cases, and in less severe cases can cause children to suffer from decreased intelligence and problems with growth, development and behavior. Lead can also increase blood pressure, harm kidney function and damage red blood cells
As for tap water in our town it contains iron. The presence of high level of iron indicates some health risk. When you clean your teeth rinse your month with clear water, or else brownish stains may occur on your teeth. In general rusty water is harmful, to our health, especially for allergic people. Corrosion control should be used to improve the situation…

Слайд 11Why do we drink rusty water?
There are thousands kilometers of rusted

metal pipes in our town. So, there are two different opinions: “Vodokanal" is asserted that water is clean, but citizens say that it becomes more and more rusty.
In all advanced countries of the world metal pipelines are almost completely replaced on polymeric and metal-polymeric, because they have a lot of benefits:
new pipes are completely ecologically safe,
don’t affected by any corrosion,
have a high durability, water does not freeze in such type of pipes.
polymeric pipes serve much longer than metal ones.

Why do we drink rusty water? There are thousands kilometers of rusted metal pipes in our town. So,

There are many types of water filters for home

use. Using them can prevent health harm from rusty water. But I think that it isn’t a final decision of the problem of rusty water, because not every citizen can use it.

Слайд 13Why I have done my project
I hope that my project helped

you to realize one of the most important ecological problems in our town.
And although only town’s officials can solve this problem, I think everyone who lives in Zheleznodorozhny should be better informed about it.
Why I have done my projectI hope that my project helped you to realize one of the
