3In 1997, the U.S. Congress issued the "United States Commemorative Coin
Program Act", which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. The 50 State Quarters were released by the United States Mint every ten weeks, or five each year.
Слайд 4Each quarter's reverse (реверс) commemorated one of the 50 states showing
its unique history, traditions and symbols, and is unique (уникальный).
Each quarter’s obverse (аверс) is the same and has George Washington’s profile on it.
9The first Europeans in North America were brave people. They left
their homes in Spain, France, England and the Netherlands. They came to the New World looking for a new life.
10The settlers brought to the New World the names of their
home towns or countries with them.
The Spaniards called their colony New Spain.
The French colony was called New France.
People from England also started colonies. By the 1750’s there were 13 English colonies along the Eastern coast of North America.
11The colonies could be divided into 3 regions: the New England
colonies, the Middle colonies and the Southern colonies.
12The first 13 colonies started in America were developing their economy.
By 1750 they were rich enough and did not have to struggle to survive. The colonists felt stronger. They wanted to have more control over their future.
13On July 4, 1776, the Congress adopted Declaration of Independence. The
colonies stated that they were no longer a part of Great Britain. A new nation was born.
14In 1783 the British Army left the harbour (гавань) of New
York. The War was over. Thirteen states had made up a new nation and it consisted of:
Massachusetts,
Rhode Island,
Connecticut,
New Hampshire,
New York,
New Jersey,
Pennsylvania,
Delaware,
Maryland,
Virginia,
North Carolina,
South Carolina,
Georgia.
15Congress worked out a system of adding new states to the
original Thirteen states. It was decided that when the population of any area grew to 60,000, the area could become a state.
16The Declaration of the Independence was adopted in 1776. And the
coins have 1787 – 1788 minted (отчеканенные) on them. Why is it so?
The year minted on the coin shows the year when the state had ratified the present US Constitution.
27Interesting Facts About Coins

wooden dome built without nails.

the New Hampshire quarter, collapsed in 2003.
