Athletes of Belarus participated for the first time in the XV

Olympic Games in 1952 which took place in Helsinki (Finland). As a part of a national team of the USSR then there were 4 Belarusian athletes and 2 fencers. The first Olympic silver medal among the Belarusian athletes was won by M. Krivonosov (a hammer throwing) on the XVI Olympic Games (1956) in Melbourne (Australia).

On the XXVI Olympic Games (1996) in Atlanta (USA) Republic of

Belarus was presented for the first time by an independent national team. Its structure included 162 athletes. Gold medal I won E.Hodotovich (boat racing, a loner kayak). The Belarusian athletes on these games received also 6 silver and 8 bronze medals.

On the XXVIII Olympic Games (2004) in Athens (Greece) in team

of Belarus 147 athletes on 23 sports were. Won 15 medals: 2 gold (Y.Nesterenko — run on 100 m and I.Makarov — judo), 6 silver and 7 bronze. In an informal team competition Belarus took the 26th place among 202 participating countries, and by quantity of medals — the 18th place.

I.Zhelezovsky on a distance of 1000 m was the first of the Belarusian athletes who received a bronze medal on the XV winter Olympic Games (1988) in Calgary (Canada). (1994) in Lillehammer (Norway) Belarus spoke for the first time at the XVII winter Olympic Games as a separate national team. On the XIX winter Olympic Games (2002) in Salt Lake City (USA) the team of Belarus as a part of 62 athletes in an informal team competition took the 19th place, and an ice-hockey national team — the 4th place.
