This is the largest central square of the city where

nowadays meeting, demonstrations and holiday festivities take place. We can see here the building of the General Staff, in the centre of the square there is the Triumphal (Alexander) Column which is 47.5 m high. In the square we can also see the building of the winter Palace and the General Headquarters.

The square of arts is so called because

many establishments of arts such theatres and museums are concentrated there. The yellowish building with white columns – the State Russian Museum, the central building of this architectural ensemble. It houses more than 300,000 items, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, water-colours works and works of applied and folk art. In June 1957, there was erected a monument to our great poet Alexander Pushkin in the centre of the square and it completed the architectural shape of the square of arts.

The square is so called to commemorate

those who participated in the first armed uprising against Russian autocracy and serfdom. It took place on the 14th of December, 1825 in this square. From the Square of the Decembrists across the Neva is seen the building of the Menshikov Palace, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Kunstkamera, the Academy of Arts. In the centre there is a monument to Peter I, the founder of the city. Behind the monument you can see one of the highest and magnificent edifices of the city – St Isaac`s Cathedral.
