from one language to another. The main task is to create an artistic text in the target language.
My project is devoted to poetry and some problems of translation. Poetry is a part of our life. I wanted to try the poetry translation. I asked myself a question - is it a difficult task to do? In fact, while reading English poems, I understand that in Russian language it doesn`t sound like a poem.
What are the peculiarities of poetry translation then?
What can I do to make my translation perfect?

Слайд 3Before starting the translation of the poems I asked questions to

the pupils of our school. I wanted to find out what they think about poetry in general. The results you can see in the chart. A study shows that:

most of the pupils like to read poetry and they have a lot of books of poetry in their home libraries
60 percent consider that it is not easy to translate the poems from English into Russian and that you need a very good knowledge of the language to do it
some pupils express the desire to read the poems in translation and to compare them with the original, but not all of them wanted to do it themselves
most pupils agree that it is possible to broaden the mind and improve the knowledge of English by reading and translating the poems

The results have strengthened me in my desire to create my own book of poetry and to find out if I am able to do it.

Before starting the translation of the poems I asked questions to the pupils of our school. I

Marshak is a famous children’s poet. His biography is very

interesting. In 1912 he moved to England and studied at the University of London. He fell n love with English culture and with poetry written in English. Later he returned to Russia and devoted himself to translation. His translations have enjoyed great success over the years.
While translating he used the richness of the Russian language. His works were deep and original. They impressed the readers very much. When Marshak translated poems of English writers he often created new characters, he expressed his feeling even more emotionally, rearranged the word order of the original and chose more accurate language structures. That is why his poetry translations became a remarkable literary works. He created a great number of masterpieces of children`s poetry.
By the example of Marshak`s biography I understood that if you want to be a translator you should not only know the language well but know the culture of different countries. You should read a lot, do perfectly at school and be good at Literature.

Слайд 5I chose the poems of different writers – James Kirkup and

John Kitching
I practiced two types of translation - direct and poetic.
Direct translation - you translate word by word, the main aim is to inform the reader, to report the information.
Poetic translation - the main function is to make an emotional impression on readers. The poem should have its melody and intonation. Rhythm connects thoughts and gives harmony of words.

James Kirkup, who has died aged 91, was an extraordinarily prolific writer in many genres. He was also an accomplished translator of verse, prose and drama, a fine travel writer, a dramatist and an autobiographer of distinction.

SEA SONG
Sea shell, sea shell
Murmuring sand,
Murmuring sand.

Sea

shell, sea shell,
Far away land,
Far away land.

Sea-shell, sea-shell,
Sing in my hand,
Sing in my hand.

Sea-shell, sea-shell,
I will understand,
You will understand.

Морская песня
Морская ракушка, морская ракушка
Шепчет песок, шепчет песок

Морская ракушка, морская ракушка
Далекая земля, далекая земля

Морская ракушка, морская ракушка
Поет в моей руке, поет в моей руке

Морская ракушка, морская ракушка
Я пойму и ты поймешь

Poetic translation

7I tried to show the original mood of the poem but

through my personal understanding. I kept only the first line of the poem and changed the last one. The author finishes his lines like
… murmuring sand, murmuring sand… I tell what the sand murmurs about
… sing in my hand, sing in my … and I continue the lines by the song which I hear standing near the sea
… I will understand, you will understand… the author lets me reproduce the dialogue between me and the sea

I tried to show the original mood of the poem but through my personal understanding. I kept

Слайд 8In conclusion, I`d like to point out some peculiarities that competent

translators should remember:

the translator should try to be as closer to the original as he can but at the same time poetry translations are done with a certain degree of freedom
you should have enough imagination and creativity to render the emotions
poetry can be translated by those who have deep interest in poetry and the poetic feel and sensation
you should have a very good knowledge of the language, written and spoken

This project helped me to feel the English language better and to be very attentive to words. I understood that the real value of the poem consists of the words that make their magic. It encouraged me to improve my knowledge of English.

Now I`d like to present my book of poetry which is illustrated by my own drawings.
Enjoy your reading!
If you have any questions I am ready to answer them.
