May 1st is the celebration of summer’s beginning. People
decorate houses and streets with branches of trees and flowers.

On the Queen’s official birthday, there
is a big parade with brass bands and hundreds of soldiers at Horse Guard’s Parade In London. At the front of the parade is the flag or «colour». The Guards are trooping the colour.

On the river Thames there are hundreds of swans.
A lot of white birds belong to the King or Queen. In July the Queen’s swan keepers go in a boat and mark the royal ones.

In summer Scottish people meet for competitions called Highland
games. They come to see sports like tossing the caber or throwing the hammer. The games include Scottish dancing and bagpipe music.

Traditionally the Queen opens Parliament every
autumn. She travels from Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament in a gold carriage. She sits on a throne in the House of Lords and reads the Queens Speech.

November 5th is Guy Fawkes Night. People build
wood fires whit a guy on the top. That is a figure of Guy Fawkes. His band wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I. However, the plot failed, Fawkes was caught.

In the ninth century the Vikings came to Shetlands in
ships and took away gold, animals and people. Every winter people of Zerwick make a model of a Viking longship with the head of a dragon inside, they dress in Viking costumes and carry the ship through the town to the sea and burn it there.
