ancient times it was a great help to ships trying to get through the rocky harbour entrance. The remains of the Pharos were found quite recently.

It was named after the man it was
built for: Mausolus, the ruler of Caria, in 353 BC. By Roman times, 400 years later, the word mausoleum was used to describe any large tomb. Today only a few fragments of the Mausoleum remain.

first was built in 2560BC at Sakkara. It is 62 metres high. There are 80 pyramids still standing today in Egypt today.
