Предтекстовый этап
1. What parts of speech do the following words belong to: a) certainly, simply, awfully, actually; b) countless, homeless? What effects do the suffixes –ly, -less have on the meaning of the words?
2. Paraphrase the following sentences paying attention to the underlined phrases.
At school he was very good at imitating people.
… he has been the subject of countless articles, rumours and showbiz gossip.
I was part of something that doesn’t come about often, if ever.
He turned down the role of Robin in ‘Batman Forever’…
3. The title, the 1st sentence and the 1st words of some paragraphs of a text have been given below. Guess what the author tells about.

4. Group work.
a) Look at the following word combinations and think of a story that might combine them all. You may reorder them in any way you want and you can use any form of the verb:
certainly knows, to be part of something, to remember forever, to change the name, to start kicking, appearing in TV commercials, a childhood hero, a modern version, a huge learning experience, top movie and youth magazines, it seems.
b) When you have decided upon the story, tell the story to your partner. Then listen to that of your partner. Ask each other as many questions as you can to learn further details or clarify some points.

Leonardo Di Caprio is one of the hottest young film stars around at the moment. Leonardo does not like reading about himself. “I read things about me that I have never said in my life and never done,” he says.
Leonardo Di Caprio was born in Los Angeles on November 11, 1974. He is a Scorpio. His full name is Leonardo Wilhelm Di Caprio. His mother is German and his father Italian-American. They called him Leonardo because when his mother was pregnant he started kicking while she was standing in front of a painting of Leonardo Da Vinci. His parents separated before he was born. Leo grew up in a poor neighbourhood of Hollywood.
At school he was very good at imitating people (especially Michael Jackson). This made him very popular. His childhood hero was Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.
After appearing in TV commercials, he played the part of a homeless boy in a TV comedy.
His big break was his leading role in This Boy’s Life.
One of his least famous films is Total Eclipse which tells the story of the poet Arthur Rimbaud and his relationship with the writer Verlaine.
One of his famous films was a modern version of Shakespeare’s  Romeo and Juliet  set in a fantasy world. Leo described his first kiss for a film as “the most disgusting thing in my life”.
After the tremendous success of Titanic, “Leomania” hit the world.
Leo simply says of the Titanic experience, “I was part of something that does not come about often, if ever. I can tell my grandchildren I was in the film.” In Leo’s opinion, “the film will be remembered forever.”
He spent his post- Titanic life avoiding interviews. “Certainly that whole year was a huge learning experience for me. There is no handbook on what it is like to become famous and how to survive it.” He says that “fame is a monster that you have no control over. If you try to fight it, it just feeds the fire.”
Leonardo is very careful about the roles he chooses. He turned down the role of Robin in «Batman Forever» and it took him an awfully long time to choose «The Beach».
Leo likes his job. “The best thing about acting is that I get to lose myself in another character and actually get paid for it,” he says. “As for myself, I am not sure who I am. It seems that I change every day.”

«Пазлы»

Учитель предварительно разрезает несколько или один текст и перемешивает их. Учащиеся могут работать в группах или отдельно. Они должны восстановить предложенные им тексты в нужной последовательности.

«Редукция текста»

Учащиеся читают текст из 20-30 предложений и сокращают его до 10-12 предложений. Главное условие - основной смысл предложенного текста  должен быть сохранен.

«Оживи картину»

Учащимся предъявляется какая-либо картина и предлагается ответить на серию вопросов о мыслях и чувствах, вызванных ей. При этом точка зрения может отражать не только мнение автора или зрителя, но и ощущения объектов, изображенных на данной картине.
