Слайд 3Ernest Hemingway is the greatest 20th-century American writer. The legend which
developed around his personality was that of a man of action, a devil-may-care adventurer, a brave war correspondent, an amateur boxer, a big-game hunter and deep-sea fisherman, but above all a brilliant writer of stories and novels.
Слайд 4Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in 1899. He was the second
of six children in the doctor’s family. Their home was at Oak Park, a Chicago suburb.
Слайд 5Ernest’s father initiated the boy into the outdoor life of hunting,
camping and fishing. While at school, Hemingway played football and wrote articles for the school newspaper.
Слайд 6In 1917, when the United States entered the World War I,
Hemingway joined "The Kansas City Star" as a cub reporter. He once said, "On the Star you were forced to learn to write a simple declarative sentence. This is useful to anyone. Newspaper work will not harm a young writer and could help him if he gets out of it in time." He wanted to enlist for the war but was rejected because of an eye injury from football.
Слайд 7In 1918, Hemingway went overseas to serve in World War I
as an ambulance driver in the Italian Army. For his service, he was awarded the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery, but was seriously wounded.
Слайд 8Ernest Hemingway returned to America in 1919. In Chicago Hemingway met
Hadley Richardson, the woman who would become his first wife. The couple married and quickly moved to Paris, where Hemingway worked as a foreign correspondent for “The Star”.
Слайд 9Ernest Hemingway was married four times. His wives were Hadley Richardson,
Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gellhorn and Mary Welsh.
Слайд 10Ernest Hemingway had three sons.
Слайд 11In 1922 Hemingway reported on the Greco-Turkish war. Two years later
he resigned from journalism to devote himself to fiction.
Слайд 12In 1925 Hemingway made the acquaintance of the great writers of
his generation in Paris. They were F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound and James Joyce. Their encouragement and criticism were to play a valuable part in the formation of his style.
Слайд 13In 1925 Hemingway took a trip to the festival that would
later provided the basis of Hemingway's first novel, “The Sun Also Rises”. The novel is widely considered Hemingway's greatest work.
Слайд 14When he wasn't writing, Hemingway spent much of the 1930s chasing
adventure: big-game hunting in Africa, bullfighting in Spain, deep-sea fishing in Florida.
Слайд 15During the World War II Hemingway was a war correspondent first
in China and then in Europe. He fought in France and helped to liberate Paris.
Слайд 16His war experience and adventurous life provided the background for his
many short stories and novels. He achieved success with "A Farewell to Arms", the story of a love affair between an American lieutenant and an English nurse during the World War I.
Слайд 17Hemingway actively supported the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War and
wrote another successful novel of war, love and death. It was "For Whom the Bell Tolls".
Слайд 18In his later years Hemingway lived mostly in Cuba where his
passion for deep-sea fishing provided the background for "The Old Man and the Sea". He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954.
Слайд 19Hemingway’s physical and mental health were seriously impaired. In 1960 he
left Cuba for Ketchum, Idaho. Unwilling to live with the inevitable physical aging, Hemingway committed suicide in his home in 1961.
I think Ernest Hemingway was witty, cheerful, generous , expansive and egocentric. He was himself a personification of the courage. In his novels and stories my interest is caught from the very first page and there is suspense till the very end!
