phrase that is not taken literally. Idiom also refers to a dialect or jargon of a group of people, either in a certain region or a group with common interests, like in science, music, art, or business.
Idiom comes from the Greek idios, which means personal.

There are idioms which contain the names of the

animals,
clothes,
parts of the body,
colors,

food,
furniture,
proper names,
geographical names…

catalogue of the most frequently used animal idioms in the English language.

The tasks are:
to study animal idioms in English, find examples of usage and the Russian equivalents;
to find similarities and differences in idioms;
to widen our English vocabulary.

We have found over 300 animal idioms in English!

Animal idioms are the subject of our work.

animal idioms.

word from one language into another without losing their meaning:
e.g. as poor as a church mouse – бедный, как церковная мышь,
a lion’s share – львиная доля,
to take the bull by the horns – взять быка за рога,
a lone wolf – одинокий волк,
to play cat and mouse – играть в кошки-мышки
и другие.

have different animals:
e.g. like a bull in a china shop – как слон в посудной лавке,
to set a cat among the pigeons – пустить лису в курятник,
like water off a duck’s back – как с гуся вода,
dumb as an oyster – немой, как рыба,
happy as a clam – счастлив, как слон,
when pigs fly – когда рак на горе свистнет,
to serve as a guinea pig – быть подопытным кроликом
и другие.

lose their animal part when translated into another language:
e.g. to hit the bull’s eye – попасть в яблочко,
to have a cow – паниковать, «кипятиться»
curiosity killed the cat –

People think that cows are slow, clumsy and shy, sometimes not very clever. The oxen are very strong.
