Слайд 2Oxford is ninety kilometers from London - about an hour by
car, bus or train. The river Thames runs through Oxford, and the river Cherwell joins it there.
Слайд 3The land is low, but there are hills to the west.
The city is old and very beautiful. It has one of the oldest and best known universities of Britain.
Слайд 4This university town is very beautiful. The oldest university there is
Oxford. The first of its colleges was founded in 1249. The university now has thirty-five colleges and about thirteen thousand students, many of them from other countries.
Слайд 5There were no women at Oxford until 1878. When the first
women's college Lady Margaret Hall, opened. Now most colleges are open to men and women. It is not easy to get a place at Oxford University to study for a degree.
Слайд 6But outside the university there are many smaller private colleges which
offer less difficult courses and where it is easy to enroll. Most students in these private school take business, secretarial or English language courses.
Слайд 7Oxford is, of course, famous for its first-class education as well
as its beautiful buildings. Some of the most intelligent men and women in the country live and work here. Oxford gives them what they need: a quiet atmosphere, friendly colleagues and the four-hundred-year-old library, which has about five million books.
Слайд 8Oxford has same of the finest architecture in Britain. Some of
their colleges, chapels and libraries are there, four and even five hundred years old, and are full off books and precious paintings. You can see there many lovely gardens, where the students can read and relax in the summer months.
Слайд 9Oxford is a very interesting city for a visitor, especially if
a visitor comes to Oxford on one of its special days.
Слайд 10May 1st is one of such days. Very early in the
morning lots of people wait in the street outside Magdalen College, and at six o'clock they can hear singing from the top of the building.
Слайд 11Then a street party begins. People dance, talk, drink and have
fun. A few students make a dangerous jump from Magdalen Bridge into the river.
Слайд 12Another special day is St. Giles's Fair which takes place in
early September. The tradition started centuries ago.
Слайд 13People came into the city to buy and sell, eat and
drink, and play sports. A hundred years ago it was fashionable to show animals and unusual people at the fair.
Слайд 14The Boat Race takes place on the Thames in London every
year. It is a race between Oxford University (in dark blue) and Cambridge University (in light blue).
Слайд 15People watch the race from the bridges or from the sides
of the river. A lot of people watch the race on television.
Слайд 16Another boat race takes place on the river Cherwell in Oxford.
It is a race between the different colleges of Oxford University.
Слайд 17The river Cherwell is narrow, that's why boats race one behind
the other. You win if you touch the boat in front.
Слайд 18Questions:
