The ejection seat was invented by James Martin, an Irish manufacturer who founded an aircraft manufacturing company Martin-Baker, where he worked successfully with his friend Captain Baker.
In 1944 the Ministry of Defense asked James Martin to develop an ejection system for high-speed fighter aircrafts. Martin discovered that the most effective way of ejection was by an explosive charge that forced the pilot’s seat up into the air. The design was mainly perfected during World War II. Following an intensive period of testing and research, the modern ejection seat was introduced in the late 1940s.
