toponyms in domestic student’s books. However, knowledge concerning the origin of the British geographical place names may provide new opportunities for learning language and culture of this country. That’s why I decided to examine in detail this issue to help other students know about linguistic features of the British toponyms.

Проблема исследования заключается в том, что в отечественных учебниках содержится слишком мало информации о топонимах. Однако знания о происхождении географических названий Великобритании могут открыть нам новые возможности для изучения языка и культуры этой страны. Поэтому я решила подробно изучить данный вопрос, чтобы помочь другим ученикам узнать о лингвистических особенностях британских топонимов.

The purpose of this work is to undertake research on the issue of linguistic features of the British toponyms. The tasks are to show how the historical characteristics of development of the English language influenced geographical names; to classify toponyms according to their etymology as well as to consider contemporary toponyms that have preserved elements of the foreign language in their composition; to know which British place names are the most popular nowadays, as well as what the origin they have.

Целью данной работы является исследование лингвистических особенностей британских топонимов. Задачи: показать, как исторические особенности развития английского языка повлияли на географические названия; классифицировать топонимы в соответствии с их этимологией, рассмотреть современные топонимы, которые сохранили в своем составе элементы иностранного языка; узнать, какие британские топонимы наиболее популярны в наши дни, а также какое происхождение они имеют.

The hypothesis is that toponyms reflect the history of the British Isles’ settlement.

Мне стало интересно узнать, какие британские топонимы наиболее популярны в наши дни, а также какое происхождение они имеют. Для этого я провела опрос среди учеников своей школы. Результаты представлены на диаграмме.

It was appropriate to draw the conclusion that the most popular British toponyms come from the Old English.

Changed under the influence of extra-linguistic factors*, toponymical system strives to maintain stability, which is revealed in the formation of structural, semantic and etymological types during each historical era. Britain and the English language have undergone successive influxes of Celtic, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and Norman conquests, which have contributed much to the history of the country.

Таким образом, проведенное исследование свидетельствует о том, что топонимы представляют собой картину истории заселения Британских островов. Измененная под влиянием экстралингвистических факторов, топонимическая система стремится сохранить стабильность, что проявляется в формировании структурных, семантических и этимологических типов в течение каждой исторической эпохи. Британия и английский язык подвергались последовательным притокам кельтских, римских, англосаксонских, скандинавских и нормандских завоеваний, которые внесли большой вклад в историю страны.

The main output of this project is a booklet . There is information about the effect of historical characteristics of development of the English language on geographical names and the classification of toponyms. This booklet can be used as a supplemental tool in English classes.
