The New Year is one of the most important and favourite holidays in Russia. Most people celebrate this holiday at home with their families.

In 1700 Russia started to celebrate the New Year on
the 1st of January by the decree of Peter 1 the Great according to the Julian calendar.
Слайд 4 Russia started using the Gregorian calendar in 1918. It was
added 13 days to the old calendar. Thus Russians have 2 New Years: celebrated by the Julian calendar (on the 14th of January - «the old» New Year) and by the Gregorian calendar as well.

Christmas tree
There are a lot of popular Russian
New Year traditions. Among them the most famous custom is assosiated with the New Year tree, which is called «Novogodnaya Yolka». Most families put up fur- or pine- trees at their houses and decorate them with children.

The New Year in Russia is impossible without Ded
Moroz (Father Frost) and his fairy granddaughter - Snegurochka (Snow Maiden). They come to greet kids and give them gifts.

On the New Year Eve people cook traditional tasty
dishes: «Olivier» salad or «Selyodka pod shuboy» that means beet coated herring. There are a lot of tangerines and champagne on the table.

speech of the head of state broadcasted over TV and radio. The President wishes a Happy New Year to the citizens of Russia.

After the speech of the President, at midnight,
the country listens to the famous Kremlin chimes ring out followed by the country’s hymn. Everyone toasts the New Year!

Some people attend fireworks in their city
or light fireworks in their backyard. Some people celebrate this day at a friends’ house or stay at home and watch TV.

One of the most famous beliefs is that Russians make
wish on the New Year Eve and believe that any wish made on this eve will come true.
