New York

New York is the largest city in the Western hemisphere and the third largest in the world. Its population is about fourteen million (with all suburbs – 'Greater New York'). It is situated on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Hudson River.
From the Observation Gallery on the top of the 381-metre high Empire State Building you can see that the city is built on a number of islands with Manhattan in the centre. New York City consists of five boroughs – Manhattan, Bronx on the mainland, Brooklyn and Queens on Long Island, and Richmond on Staten Island. As Manhattan, the centre of the city, is an island, very many people either have to cross a bridge, travel through a tunnel, or take a ferry-boat to get to work.

main sights of New York City and the symbol of freedom of all Americans. It’s the statue of a graceful woman with the flare in her hand, which enlightens the world. The structure of the woman is colossal. Its total height is about 93 meters. The woman only, without the flare and the base, is 46 meters. When visitors want to reach the spiky crown of the statue they should overpass 356 stairs. The Statue of Liberty is situated on the Liberty Island, which is not far from Manhattan. The full name of the statue is “Liberty Enlightening the World” and it was presented to the USA by Frenchmen on 28 October 1886 in order to commemorate the centennial of the American Revolution.

New York City in 1931. It rises to a height of 1,250 feet (381 m) and was the first skyscraper of such great vertical dimension. It was the highest structure in the world until 1954. A 222-foot (68-metre) television antenna mast, added in 1950, increased its total height to 1,472 feet (449 m); the height was reduced to 1,454 feet (443 m) in 1985 when the old antenna was replaced. The building site is in midtown Manhattan, on Fifth Avenue at 34th Street.

famous art museum in New York. It has great art collections from all over the world. It’s located in Central Park.

lights from all the theaters and advertisements are very bright. On New Year’s Eve, December 31, crowds of people stand in Times Square and wait for midnight. At midnight everyone shouts, “Happy New Year!” to everyone.

New York City. It occupies an area of 840 acres (340 hectares) and extends between 59th and 110th streets (about 2.5 miles [4 km]) and between Fifth and Eighth avenues (about 0.5 miles [0.8 km]). It was one of the first American parks to be developed using landscape architecture techniques.

collections of modern and contemporary art. This museum was designed by the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.
