Слайд 3Part 1
In the beginning of the fifth century, Christianity was not
only tolerated by the Roman Empire, but it had become the official religion of the Roman world. The Church proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But there were those who were not part of the Roman world. These people were all called by the general name:barbarians. These barbarians were a constant threat to the Roman Empire.
Слайд 4The Roman citizens of Britain were constantly threatened by
four major groups
of barbarians: the Scots, the Irish, the Picts and the Saxons. This was the Britain into which St. Patrick was born in 389 A.D. His father, Calpurnius, was a Briton and Roman citizen, belonging to the middle class landowners who were the backbone of the Roman economy. Calpurnius was also
Christian deacon.
Being the son of a deacon, Patrick was educated in the
Christian faith. He, like his father, would become a citizen of
Rome and, perhaps, farm his father's land. However, God had
different plans for young Patrick. The sixteen-year-old Patrick
was taken away to lreland as a slave.
Слайд 5For six years Patrick served his Irish master
faithfully. Every morning he
took his master's pigs out to feed on a nearby mountain, Mt. Miss. Being alone, he had plenty of time to think and to pray. As those six years passed, he grew closer and closer to God. He would rise early each morning and pray to the God of his father, the Lord Jesus Christ. He was homesick and longed to return home to Britain. On one such early morning, while Patrick was at a prayer, God touched his heart.
Thus, Patrick found himself in the islet of Lerins, which
had a famous monastic community where such great monks as SS Vinsent and Honoratus lived. There at Lerins, Patrick built upon the spiritual foundation of prayer that had been established on the Irish mountain. After spending several years at Lerins, he decided to return to Britain
Слайд 6"Men make plans; and God laughs", so the old Scottish proverb
goes. Patrick had been chosen by God for another task. Every night the same dream troubled his sleep. Each time his eyes closed he heard the voice of the Irish calling to him:"We pray you, holy youth, to come to us and walk amongst us as before." God was calling him to return to Ireland. The years at Lerins had taught him something. He had trusted God in Ireland and He delivered him. And now he had to put his whole life in God's hands once more. Patrick chose God's way. He answered the call of the Irish.
He spent fourteen years studying the Christian faith. Patrick asked the Pope for permission to begin a mission among the Irish. The permission was granted and he was consecrated a bishop. Now, fourteen yeas later, Patrick set out to answer the cries of Irish.
Слайд 7Part 2
On his arrival to Ireland, the new bishop began to
plan how he would bring the Gospel to these pagan people. It was not an easy task. There were major problems: the political arrangement of Ireland and the difficulty of finding the simplest way to explain the Christian faith to the Irish.
The power and authority of government lay in the hands of High King of Ireland and the lesser kings who were subjects to the High King. These men controlled all of the land.
There was the problem of how to teach these people the Christian faith, for they did not think in philosophical terms as the people of the Greco-Roman world did. How could he explain the Holy Trinity, the most basic and fundamental teaching of the Christian faith? Three in One and One in Three was not the easiest to understand. One day, looking at the ground, Patrick found his answer: clover. Therefore, the clover became the sign of Patrick's mission.
Слайд 8After some time Bishop Patrick was able to win the king's
friendship and respect by his love and gentle manner. The High King permitted the building of churches, putting the Christian mission under his personal protection. Nevertheless, he refused to be baptized, although his own three daughters and even his brother, King Conall, became Christians. The Gospel was slowly being spread throughout the entire island.
Bishop Patrick loved his new vineyard of Christ. There are many stories of how the saint prayed for his people. Day and night St. Patrick worked to bring the Light of Christ to these people "who sat in darkness". He had a great love for the simple folk, and it was the sick, the lepers who could move his heart the most. He saw the image of Christ in such people and could often been seen embracing lepers with the love of a father. He was truly a good pastor, a living icon of Christ, caring for both the souls and the bodies of his flock. In this way Bishop Patrick gained the respect of all his flock.
Слайд 9The secret of his strength and energy lay in his real
love of God, a love so great that it had to be shared with those around him.
Christianity had triumphed in Ireland.
Early in the year 461, the retired bishop was given fore knowledge of his own coming death. On March 17, St. Patrick fell asleep in the Lord. St. Patrick ordered that his body be buried secretly.
He planted the Tree of Life in a new land. It bore fruit, but not without the toil of prayer, love, hardship, humility and suffering. St. Patrick is a guide not only to the Irish, but also to all Christian people.

Holy Bishop Patrick,
Faithful shepherd of Christ's royal flock,
You filled Ireland with the radiance of the Gospel:
The mighty strength of the Trinity!
Now that you stand before the Savior,
Pray that He may preserve us in faith and love!
Слайд 11Kontakion, tone 4
From slavery you escaped to freedom in Christ's service:
He sent you to deliver lreland from the devil's bondage.
You planted the Word of the Gospel in pagan hearts.
In your journeys and hardships you rivaled the Apostle Paul!
Having received the reward for your labors in heaven,
Never cease to pray for the flock you have gathered on earth,
Holy bishop Patrick!
