His father was a shoemaker.
His parents dead when Arkhip was very young.
In 1855 the boy went to Feodosiya and tried to become an apprentice of Ivan Aivazovsky.

In 1865 he went to St.Petersburg and there made the picture named "The Tatar hut in the Crimea“. In 1868 it was presented at the academic exhibition. Thanks to this picture he got the title of a free artist.
In 1870 he became an extern of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
At the same time he got acquainted with wanderers(Kramskoy, Repin).

Later, in 1879 he painted «The north»
These three pictures became a trilogy.

France as he was preparing to marriage with Vera Leontievna Ketcherdzhi-Shapovalova.
He became a participant of the Association of the Wanderers and presented the picture called «Steppe»
In 1878 his paintings were exhibited at World Exhibition in Paris

«Birch Grove».
One year late he did the same thing with «Dnepr in the morning».
The painter bought estate in Crimea in 1886 where he lived with his wife.
