Слайд 10 Omsk is an old Siberian town. It
was founded in 1716 by a group of Russian solders and cossaks under the guidance of an officer Buchgolts. They were sent by Peter the Great to Siberia for search of gold but had no success. In 1716 they landed on the left bank of the Om river and built a wooden fortress there which was later renamed into a town of Omsk.

place of exile. Decembrists and other revolutionaries were exiled to Omsk. A great Russian writer Dostoevsky lived in Omsk for four years.
He wrote at that time: «Omsk is a dirty town. I have not seen any time nature here». And indeed before the revolution the streets of Omsk were unpaved, there were no parks and gardens and very few stone houses there. Most of them were wooden ones.
Слайд 12 Omsk is a birthplace of many famous people. A
well known painter Vrubel, outstanding revolutionary and a statesman Kuibishev and a hero of the Soviet Union Karbishev were born in our town. Many revolutionaries: Lobkov, Maslennikov, Dolgirev gave their lives in the struggle against white guards in Omsk. You can see a monument to fighters for revolution in the centre of the city.

and cultural center of Siberia with all the features of a modern city and with population over a million people. The major industries of Omsk are engineering and chemical industry. Omsk Oil Refinary plant and of Synthetic Rubber are the biggest in the Soviet Union.
There are 13 higher schools in Omsk now. They are: Omsk State University, the Pedagogical Institute, the Medical Institute and some others. Beside this Omsk has many research institutes.

Drama Theatre, the Puppet Theatre and the Children’s Theatre, Music Theatre. Omsk Folk Choir is known all over the Soviet Union and abroad.
If anyone wants to visit Omsk he can arrive by train, as the main railway passes through Omsk, by passenger ship, as the Irtysh is a navigable river, or by plane, as the airport of Omsk is big and comfortable.

new blocks of houses are being built and many streets are being covered with asphalt. Omsk is especially beautiful in summer. Many flowers and trees make it really a garden city.
