Слайд 3Prehistory
According to the medieval chronicler of the Venerable Bede, in 604

priest Mellit, sent by St. Augustine (Archbishop of Canterbury), baptized the king of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex Sabert, in whose possession was Londinium (Roman name of London). In the same year, Sabert appointed Mellit first Bishop of the Kingdom, and ordered the construction of a wooden Church dedicated to the Apostle Paul. There is an assumption, though unproven, that the Church was located in the same place as the modern Cathedral of St. Paul, so the history of the Cathedral is taken to conduct it from 604.
After the death Alberta (616 year) his sons renounced Christianity, returned to paganism and drove out the Millit. As for the Church of St. Paul, it burned down in 675. Later, when Christianity was re-established in Essex (late VII century), twice erected a new Church in honor of the Apostle Paul, but both times they were destroyed by a large-scale fire (in 962 and 1087, respectively).

The construction of the fourth main temple

of London, today called the Old Cathedral of St. Paul (Old St Paul's), began Normans immediately after the fire of 1087. Works were suspended after the next big fire in 1136 therefore it was completed only in 1240. Already in 1256 the reconstruction of the Cathedral began, finally completed only in 1314. For those two centuries, while construction continued, to replace the Romanesque style was Gothic, which reflected on the external appearance of a building.

Certain plans to update

the old Cathedral existed long before the fire in 1661. It was planned to make changes in the exterior and interior so as to bring the overall style of the building in harmony with the Western facade, built in the 1630s in the style of classicism, while the earlier parts of the Cathedral remained Gothic.

The first time after the fire considered the possibility of building a new Cathedral on the ruins of the old, but then the idea was abandoned. It was decided to start construction from the ground up, having previously completely disassembled the Foundation of the old Cathedral.

Слайд 6The Project "Interpretation»
In 2010, a long-term project "Interpretation"was launched to cover

the life of the Cathedral for visitors and tourists. The so — called "Eye of the Cathedral" was discovered-a 270-degree multimedia panorama, which tells in detail about 1400 years of the history of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The Eye is located in the former Treasury in the crypt. Also within the framework of the project, multimedia screens were installed, which allow to consider the architectural details of the Cathedral, to increase individual sections of frescoes and walls, to listen to interviews with the rector of the Cathedral and the team of restorers, or to see archival records of the most important services and events. All information is available in 12 languages, including Russian.

St. Paul's Cathedral in London survived

a massive bombing during the Battle of England (1940-1941). Twice it got bombs dropped from German planes. On September 12, 1940, the most powerful time bomb that fell on the Cathedral was successfully defused, taken out of the city and liquidated by a special unit of the Royal engineering service St. Paul's Cathedral (London)

during the Second world war by the command of Lieutenant Robert Davis. It saved the building. If the bomb exploded at the crash site, it would completely destroy the sight, leaving a funnel with a diameter of 30 meters.
