In September 1620, a hundred and
two Purtans and colonists leave
Plymuth, England on a ship called
The Mayflower. The people on this
ship were called pilgrims.

to America. Once they finally reached America, they got off the boat at a place called Plymouth Rock.
The voyage on the Atlantic Ocean was very dangerous.
In December 1620, they arrived in America, in what is today Cape Cod, Massachusetts. These original colonists are known as the Pilgrims or Pilgrim Fathers.

The Indians had lived in this
land for all of their lives.
They felt like the Pilgrims were
trying to take over their territory.
There were many fights between
the Pilgrims and the Indians.

Pilgrims and Indians had decided they did not want to fight anymore.
In the spring of 1621, Native Americans from the Wampanoag tribe helped  the Pilgrims survive.
One of them could speak English. His name was Squanto.
Squanto showed the colonists how to plant local crops, such as pumpkin and corn, as well as where to fish and hunt.

The harvest of 1621 produced 
a lot of food so a Thanksgiving was
