7 July 1930) was a Scottish writer and physician, most noted for his fictional stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. He was a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.

worked at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, where he started the first training course for nurses in all of Scotland. Bell is best known for providing the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s world-famous character, Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle met Bell at University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1877. He was studying to become a doctor, and Bell was his professor.
