Слайд 4In 1337 the monk Sergij founded a small monastery (обитель) on

the mount Makovets not far from Radonezh. Thanks to him it became the centre of Moscow Russia very soon.

But

in 1422 it was restored and Sergij Radonezhsky was named “the protector of all Russian lands and the patron before God”.
His relic (мощи) are kept in the main part of the monastery in Trotsky cathedral.
Andrei Rublyov painted his famous icon “Holly Trinity” for the decoration of this cathedral.

Слайд 9In the middle of the XVl century another stone cathedral was

erected on the territory of the monastery. Its was named (Успения Пресвятой Богородицы). Ivan the Terrible helped to finish its construction by giving 5 thousand rubles, a great sum in those days. In this way he wanted to pray his sin of his son’s killing.
Icon painters from Yaroslavl and local masters painted the cathedral for 100 summer days. Their frescos are well preserved (сохранились) nowadays.

Слайд 12There are many wonderful buildings in Sergiev Pasad. One of the

most graceful is a well- proportioned, solemn (величественный) and elegant chapel of (Троице-Сергиевой Лавры). It is considered to be the most beautiful construction of Russian architecture of the XVlll century. There are 42 bells in this 5 stored chapel. At the beginning of the XX century 2 more storeys were added. Now its height is 87 m which is higher than Ivan the Great chapel in the Kremlin.
