manager of the Russian American Company and governor of Russian America from 1799 to 1818.

He managed all of the company's interests in Russian America, including the Aleutian and Kuril
Islands. Activity in the region flourished as trading in sea otters and seals boomed. Baranov convinced native hunters to expand their range to include the coasts of California.

1818, by Russian navy Capt. Lt. Leontii Hagemeister amidst rumors that Baranov had secretly siphoned money to American banks in his own name.

around the Cape of Good Hope. The ship made an extended stopover in the Dutch settlement of Batavia, on the island of Java, then part of the colonial Dutch East Indies (present day Indonesia), in March, 1819.

a Russian seafarer and merchant born in Rylsk.
Rylsk.Shelekhov's voyage was done under the auspices of the so-called Shelekhov-Golikov company, the other owner of which was Ivan Larionovich Golikov.

of Alaska Natives, harassed the Russian party and Shelekhov responded by killing hundreds and taking hostages to enforce the obedience of the rest.

permanent Russian settlement in Alaska on the island's Three Saints Bay (Unalaska had existed long before, but it was never considered the permanent base for Russians until Shelekhov’s time).
