90s of the XIX century. Moreover, merchants bought only those in which the picture was not accompanied by an inscription in a foreign language. It was then applied in Russian.

In 1843, sir Henry Cole decided to do something new for
Christmas. In the past, like many others, he sent letters to friends, family and business clients, but in 1843 he surprised everyone with a holiday greeting card. He commissioned artist John Walcott HORSLEY to design this postcard.
