In the year 1620, a ship named the Mayflower brought 102
English men, women and children to the rocky coast of what is now Massachusetts, one of the 50 states of the United States of America. The ship's passengers were Puritans—members of a religious sect which was unpopular in Britain because its members wanted to reform the Church of England. They came to America to 10 found a community where they could practice their religion without interference.

The New World promised us freedom and changes
The weather was rough
and the sea was cold
But we left our homes, both Saints and Strangers,
Some for religion and some for gold.
Слайд 5The Mayflower is a very famous ship. Hundreds of years ago, in the
year 1620, people from England (Pilgrims) sailed to America on the Mayflower to start a new life. It took them sixty-six days (from September 16 until November 21) to cross the ocean between Europe and America. That’s a very long time! Can you imagine being on a boat in bad weather for over two months, without even knowing what your new country would look like? Because they thought the Americas would be a much better place to live, they bravely took on the journey! They finally landed near what is now Cape Cod in November, just as winter was getting started.

With storms and disease, we faced many dangers,
Our families died, but we didn’t stop,
And we reached the New World, both Saints and Strangers,
Soldiers of fortune and pilgrims of hope.

It was winter, and it was very cold. The land was
covered with ice. Supplies of food and the fresh water were running out. A lot of people were unhappy and even angry, and some were even thinking of a revolt.
Слайд 11Their first winter was very hard. They arrived too late to
grow many crops; and without fresh food, half the colony died of cold, hunger, and diseases. The following spring the Indians of Massasoit’s tribe taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn a new food for the colonists. They showed them other crops to grow in the unfamiliar soil and how to fish and hunt.

In the autumn
of 1621 the Pilgrims harvested their first crops. To celebrate this harvest William Bradford, the leader of Pilgrims, proclaimed a three day feast and celebration. Pilgrims invited the Indians to join in the festivities.
This is the feast that is known to most of us as the first Thanksgiving in America. For fifty –five years there was no fighting between Pilgrims and the Indians.

Слайд 17The First Thanksgiving
When the Pilgrims
first gathered together to share
with their Indian
friends
in the mild autumn air,
they lifted the voices
in jubilant praise
for the bread on the table,
the berries and maize,
for field and for forest,
for turkey and deer,
for the bountiful crops
they were blessed with that year.
They were thankful for these
as they feasted away,
and as they were thankful
we're thankful today.
Слайд 18As the years passed, many other colonists settled in America. In
1873, George Washington, the first President of The United States, proclaimed the first Thanksgiving Day for all Americans.
Then President Abraham Lincoln made the last Thursday of November Thanksgiving Day.
Today Thanksgiving is a happy time when families gather together.
