We cannot agree with this statement completely. There are a lot of classic books that are very popular nowadays. Our most favourite books are all English classics.
Daphne du Maurier, an English writer, had an outstanding writing talent. Her novel “Rebecca” , one of her best works, is among the most memorable in twentieth-century literature.
There are different opinions about the main idea and the main characters of the story but there is no doubt that it is still very popular today.
To sum up, if you want to learn English history and culture, you should read English classics.
Rebecca, the first Mrs de Winter, has been dead for less than a year. But Rebecca’s presence is in and around Manderley. They say, she was a popular woman when she was alive. Everybody loved her but she was also a cruel, dominant and wicked woman, a liar.
The narrator/ the second Mrs de Winter.
We don’t know her name, she is referred to as “my wife”, “my dear” and “Mrs de Winter”. She was only 21, she was shy , naïve and very sensitive. She tells the story with feelings and despair.

Maxim tells his wife the truth about his first marriage to Rebecca. It was nothing but a sham. Everybody thought she was the kindest, the most charming person. People thought Maxim was the luckiest man in the world when he married her. But Rebecca was cruel and selfish, she manipulated everyone around her, she never loved anyone except herself. She had numerous love affairs and told Maxim about them. Once, in a rage, Maxim shot her and sank her body at sea.
The second Mrs de Winter thinks little of Maxim’s murder confession. Now she knows, Maxim has never loved Rebecca, he loves her.
“I love you so much,” he whispered, “but it’s too late.”
“It’s not too late,” I said, putting my arms round him.
“I love you more than anything in the world.”
