born on the 3rd of November in 1887 in Voronezh. There were six children in the family.
He began to compose when he was four.

later studied at the gymnasium of Ostrogozhsk.

family moved to Saint Petersburg.
One day in St Petersburg Marshak met with the famous critic V. V. Stasov who was impressed by the schoolboy’s talent. Samuel was only 14.

studied philosophy at the university in London. He fell in love with English poetry and translated Shakespeare,Byron,Kipling.
