Welsh National tartan

consists of a red dragon passant on a green and white field.
The flag incorporates the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd, along with the Tudor colours of green and white. It was used by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 after which it was carried in state to St Paul's Cathedral. The red dragon was then included in the Tudor royal arms to signify their Welsh descent.

The flag was granted official status in 1959, but the red dragon itself has been associated with Wales for centuries.

The red dragon is popularly believed to have been the battle standard of Arthur and other ancient Celtic/Romano-British leaders.

David is believed to have been born in South West Wales. The year of his birth is estimated from 462 to 515 AD.

Saint patron of Wales

We know that David was born into an aristocratic family. According to the legend, an angel foretold the birth of David to St Patrick 30 years before it happened.
As David was born a lightning from heaven struck the rock, splitting it in two.
David was educated at a monastery. He is said to have cured his tutor of blindness by making the sign of the cross.

St David's, the United Kingdom's smallest city, stands today.
The most famous story relating to St David occurred as he preached to a large crowd. One of the crowd shouted, "We won't be able to see or hear him". The ground David stood on is said to have risen up so that he was standing on a hill, so he could be seen and heard by all.
David is said to have lived for over 100 years, and died on Tuesday 1 March 589.
In the 12th century he was made the patron saint of Wales, with his feast day on 1 March.
St. David is often shown with a dove on his shoulder. The bird symbolises the Holy Spirit.

St. David's is Britain's smallest city. Lying on the River Alun, the town is the de facto religious capital of Wales and the final resting place of Saint David, the country's patron saint.

The St Davids Cathedral Festival has been responsible for bringing classical music to the heart of West Wales for the past 32 years.

that there was an actual Arthur, a great figure in the struggle between the British and the Saxons is Arthur. He may have been of the Roman tradition, since the Romans had an officer - Duke of Britain - who was leader of a mobile force, charged with the duty of protecting the integrity of the Roman province.
Places commemorating Arthur may be found in widely separated parts of Britain. His greatest victory came in about AD 496 at Mons Badonicus, a place perhaps in Sussex or possibly near Bath. The victory halted the Saxon advance for at least half a century.

Whether Arthur was actually a king or merely a warrior, however, is less clear. It is believed that he was the leader of Brythonic forces, and was killed following the battle of Camlann in about 515.
In the earliest mentions of Arthur in Welsh texts, he is never given the title of king. He was a Romano-British warrior leader defending Britain against Anglo Saxon invaders in the late fifth or early sixth century.
