Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The UK (United Kingdom) is situated on the British Isles. It is in the north-west of Europe. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland.
Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. They are separated by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. It consists of four parts. They are called England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The population of UK is over 60 million people.
The head of state is the Queen. English is the official language of Great Britain. The longest river is the Severn and the best-known river is the Thames. The capital of the United Kingdom is London.
It stands on the banks of the Thames. The national flag of the UK is called “Union Jack”. England is the largest country in the south of Great Britain. The symbol of England is the red rose. The English national flag is a red cross.
Its area is 130 324 (one hundred thirty thousand three hundred and twenty four) square kilometer. The population of England is over 50 million people. The patron saint of England is St. George. There are large industrial cities, such as Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester. There are other famous and interesting cities such as York, Chester, Oxford and Cambridge in England too.
