The story of chocolate

Слайд 4Chocolate comes from cocoa beans, which grew on trees in Central

America. Cocoa trees can only live in hot, rainy places near the Equator. The trees bear large orange fruit, about the size of small pumpkins.

Слайд 5By around 2000 BC, pre-OLMEC people in Central America (modern Mexico) were making

them into a hot or cold spicy chocolate drink with vanilla or peppers in it or a sort of spicy porridge with CORN and chilies in it. Sometimes people sweetened chocolate with HONEY. Our word chocolate probably comes from the Aztec phrase "cacaua atl" which means "cacao drink".

Слайд 6Christopher Columbus, who discovered America, tasted the cacao beans on his

fourth voyage to the American continents in August 1502. Columbus himself didn’t much like the drink made from cacao beans, but he took the bean back with him to Spain. Chocolate drinks became well-loved by the wealthy in Spain and other parts of Europe. Up until the 1700s, chocolate was mainly a drink. In fact, only the rich could afford chocolate drink.

Слайд 7 In the 1850s, Englishman Joseph Fry changed the drink by adding

more cocoa butter, rather than hot water, to cocoa powder and sugar. The world’s first solid chocolate was born. In 1875, Daniel Peter and Henri Nestle added condensed milk to solid chocolate, creating a milk chocolate bar. Today, over 3 billion tons of cacao supplies a 35 billion dollar chocolate industry.
