Probably the most famous discovery ever made in Britain

was the Sutton Hoo burial site in Suffolk. It all happened on the very eve of the Second World War. A lady called Mrs. Edith Pretty owned a house and some land where 18 mysterious mounds of earth lay. In 1939, she asked archaeologist Basil Brown to excavate them.

Basil excavated the mounds and found they were burial

mounds, dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. Sadly, many of them had been robbed, but beneath the largest mound he found the remains of a 9-metre wooden ship.

Inside the ship was a burial chamber the size of a small room. Although no body was found, chemical tests on the soil suggest a body had been buried there in Saxon times. There was a sword, a shield and a helmet. There were also many gold and silver things, such as weapons, cups, brooches, jewellery and coins. The dates of the coins found suggest the person was probably Anglo-Saxon king Raedwald who died around AD 617.
