history.

The reign of Queen ElizabethI (1558-1603) saw England emerge as the leading naval and commercial power of the Western world.

England consolidated its
position with the defeat of the
Spanish Armada in 1588, and
Elizabeth firmly established
the Church of England begun
by her father, King Henry VIII
(following Henry's dispute
with the Pope over having his
first marriage annulled).

STRATFORD-upon-AVON

Слайд 6
On April 23, 1564 a son, William, was born to John

and Mary Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon. John was rich enough to send the boy to the Grammar School of the town to get quite a good education. There William learned to love reading. While still a teenager, he married Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter some years older than himself. When William was 22, he left Stratford and went to London where he joined the company of actors. At first he improved old plays, and then he began to write his own plays. William also acted in his own and other plays. Most of his plays were performed in the new Globe Theatre built on the River Thames. In 1613 he stopped writing and went to live in Stratford where he died in 1616.

Shakespeare’s birthplace in Henley Street.
This is the school where Shakespeare was educated, as many people believe.

This is the grave of Shakespeare in the Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare was buried in 1616.

from Shakespeare:
All’s well that ends well.
All that

glistens isn’t gold.
There’s no darkness but ignorance.
Much ado about nothing.
He jests at scars, that never felt a wound.

Не все золото, что блестит.
Много шума из ничего.
Над шрамами смеется тот, кто не был ранен.
Все хорошо, что хорошо кончается.
Ученье-свет, да не ученье - тьма.

By the end of the 16th century the playhouse was built

and was called “The Globe” It was the first time ever in England actors had paid to build the theatre.
The “Globe”was situated outside of London, at a place called Southwark. The building was round. The galleries and the stage had a thatched roof over
thembut the pit was open to the sky. There were two doors. A sign of Hercules bearing the globe upon his shoulders was displayed in front of the main doors.
The Latin words read “All the world is a stage.” A flying flag was on the top of the theatre during the performance. “The Globe” was also called by the
people “The Golden theatre” and “The glory of the bank”. Performances began at three o’clock p.m. and lasted for three hours. There was very little
scenery, trusting to the imagination of the audience. Sometimes an actor would come on the stage and say: “You must believe the stage to be garden”.
Unless the public satisfied, apples, nuts and even stones and tiles from the pit would fly about in all directions, frequently hitting the noblemen as well,
if any were on the stage. Elizabeth took a great fancy to Shakespeare’s plays. The actors and Shakespeare could each get a fair share of the profit.
393 years ago, on June 29th 1613 the theatre was destroyed by the fire.

Tired with all these, for restful death I

cry,
As, to behold Desert a beggar born,
And needy Nothing trimm'd in jollity,
And purest faith unhappily forsworn,
And gilded Honour shamefully misplaced,
And maiden Virtue rudely strumpeted,
And right Perfection Wrongfully disgraced,
And Strength by limping Sway disabled,
And Art made tongue-tied by Authority,
And folly doctor-like controlling Skill,
And simple Truth miscall'd Simplicity,
And captive Good attending captain ll:

Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,
Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.
