We use the past continuous to talk about the past:
for something which continued before and after another action;
for something that happened before and after a particular time;
for something that was happening again and again.

Past Continuous

another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.

Form: had + past participle of the main verb

past and continued up to a given time in the past
for something we had done several times up to a point in the past and continued to do after that point
for something that happened in the past but is important at the time of reporting

that something started in the past and continued up until another time in the past. "For five minutes" and "for two weeks" are both durations which can be used with the Past Perfect Continuous.

Form: had + been + main verb + -ing

with past perfect simple;
puts emphasis on the course or duration of an action;
