The United Kingdom is very small compared with many other countries in the world. The total area of Great Britain is 244,820 square kilometres. However, there are only nine other countries with more people, and London is the world's seventh biggest city. The population of Great Britain is 60,776,238 (2007 estimate).
The flag of The United Kingdom of Great Britain is called the Union Jack. The main areas of high land are in Scotland, Wales and Cumbria. In the centre of England is a range of hills called the Pennines, which are also known as the 'backbone of England'. The highest mountains are in Scotland and Wales: Ben Nevis is 4,406 feet (1,343 m.) and Snowdon is 3,560 feet (1,085 m.). Of course, these are very small compared with other mountains in the world - Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is 29,000 feet (8,839 m.). In fact everything in the United Kingdom is rather small - the longest rivers are the Severn (220 miles, 354 km.) and the River Thames (215 miles, 346 km.). Compare these with the River Amazon in South America which is 4,195 miles (6,751 km.) long! Despite its size, there is a great deal of variety within the islands of the United Kingdom.

England is part of

both Great Britain and the United Kingdom. It covers a total area of 130,478 square kilometres  - 57 per cent of the whole island, and its capital is London. England is divided into 34 counties. The population of England is 50,762,900 (2006). The overall population density of 376 persons/square kilometre is one of the highest in the world.
The national emblem of England is the Rose. Just as the United States is personified as Uncle Sam, so England often appears in caricature as either 'Britannia', a heroic female figure holding a trident (the symbol of sea power), or as 'John Bull' a goodhumoured, well-fed country gentleman personifying determination and common sense. The patron saint of England is St George, whose feast is celebrated on 23 April (also Shakespeare's birthday).

in the northern part of the island of Great Britain. Along with England, to the south, and Wales, to the southwest, and Northern Ireland on the other British island, Scotland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Scotland is about 30,000 square miles in area, which is about the size of the state of South Carolina. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. Scotland can be divided into three main parts, the Highlands in the north, the Lowlands in the center, and the Uplands in the south. The coastline is rocky and irregular, indented with many sea lochs (narrow inlets) and firths (wide inlets). The country is dotted with beautiful lakes, also called lochs. Many islands surround Scotland, including the Shetland and the Orkney Islands to the north and the Hebrides to the west. The Uplands are a region of rolling hills and valleys, with many rivers such as the Tweed, the Clyde, and the Teviot. The Lowlands are the most populated.

the size of the state of Massachusetts. Wales is a land of wild and rugged beauty. Its coastline is deeply indented with bays and off the northwest coast is the island of Anglesey, which forms a county of Wales. Most of the region consists of highlands, with mountains rising in the northwest and southeast. There is a coastal plain around three sides. Most of the people live on the coastal plain. The principal river of Wales is the Severn. Others are the Taff, the Usk, the Wye, and the Dee. There are two important lakes: Lake Bala in the north, which is the source of the Dee; and Lake Vyrnwy. In the western part of Wales the climate is cool in summer and mild in winter; in the eastern part the summers are warm and the winters cold. Rainfall is heavy throughout the region.
