along parts of the Thames valley. All the time it was mostly wild forested countryside. In later prehistoric times the settlers became more organized. In 55 BC Caesar landed in Britain and founded the military camp of Londinium on a strategic ford across the Thames. The area which the Romans fortified is now the City of London.

British kings and queens and is the symbol of the monarch. This Palace is neither very old nor very beautiful; nothing very remarkable has happened there; fewer people work there than staff the Press Office in the White House. Yet it is the most famous address in the world.

Now the City is a miniature city within the capital. It includes St. Paul's Cathedral, Cornhill, which is the modern business, banking and insurance area consisting of the Royal Exchange, the Bank of England and Mansion House (the official residence of the City's Lord Mayor). For the visitors the initial impression of the City is of a largely modern landscape with banks and tall office blocks, some of them are the highest skyscrapers in Europe.

the Battle of Trafalgar. In the centre of the square there is Nelson's Column. The column is topped by a statue of Lord Nelson, the admiral who commanded the British Fleet at Trafalgar in 1805. It is surrounded by fountains and four huge bronze lions. The square is a popular tourist spot in London with the National Gallery on the North side and Whitehall to the South.
