the British Isles which consist of two large islands: Great Britain and Ireland and about five thousand small islands.
The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the English Channel and the Straits of Dover. The west coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea; the east coast is washed by the North Sea.

Isles: the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
The UK includes Great Britain and the northern part of the island of Ireland. The Irish Republic occupies the rest of the island.
