Слайд 3New Zealand is a South Pacific country located midway between the
Equator and South Pole, approximately 1600 kilometres east of Australia. New Zealand is similar in size to Japan, Britain or Italy. There are two main islands, the North and South islands, separated by the Cook Strait.
Слайд 4A special feature of the North Island is the central volcanic
region with three still active volcanic peaks and thermal activity featuring hot springs, geysers and boiling mud pools.
Слайд 5Both major islands contain fertile areas of pastoral land. Until 1970
– s agricultural products have provided 90% of New Zealand’s export income.
Слайд 6Mountains occupy ¾ of the territory of the country. Raupehy (2797
m) is the highest mountain of the North Island. The spectacular Southern Alps of the South Island include 19 peaks exceeding 3000 metres.
Слайд 7Both major islands contain large forests. They occupy about ¼ of
the country. Many animals and plants are endemics.
Слайд 8Numerous lakes exist in both islands with the larger North Islands
lakes situated on the volcanic central plateau and the major South Island lakes set in beautiful mountain scenery.
Слайд 9Swift – flowing rivers provide a valuable source of hydro –
electric power. The Uonganue is the longest river. It rises in volcano Tongariro and flows into the Tasman Sea.
Слайд 10On the south – west coast of the South Island high
mountain ranger meet the ocean in a series of dramatic fiords.
Слайд 11There are 14 national parks in the country. Tongariro is one
of them.
Слайд 12New Zealand was discovered and settled more than a thousand years
ago by the Maori people, who migrated from the Polynesian Island of the South Pacific.
Слайд 13The first Europeans to see the land were the Dutch navigator
Abel Tasman in 1642, and the English explorer James Cook in 1769. Organized European settlement began in the mid – 19th century after the establishment of British sovereignty in 1840, marked by the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between leading Maori chiefs and the British Government.
Слайд 14Okland is the largest city of New Zealand. It was founded
in 1840. 1/3 part of the population of the country lives in Okland. People of 181 nationalities live here.
In 1865 the capital was moved to Wellington.
