Reynolds. His style is also influenced by
the Dutch masters and Van Dyck. All
the predecessors and contemporaries of
Gainsborough followed the tradition of
painting imaginary Italian scenery in
the style of Claude de Lorrain.
Gainsborough was the first English who
broke this tradition. He worked out his
personal style and represented the
landscapes of his own country.
He is famous for the elegance of his
portraits painted in clear tones.
