My favorite word is “oryx”. Why? Read to
find out!
Kings of the harsh deserts of Namibia and South Asia, oryxes are easily distinguished by their bull-like bodies and beautiful white pattern on the muzzle. Oryxes are of light-brown color, which helps them to interflow with sands and dry grass.
But the most spectacular thing in every oryx’s appearance are his horns. The little ones, both males and females, are born with them; all horns are straight or sable-like and sharp, and can pierce their enemy’s heart without any difficulty, so take care if you meet one!

The word “oryx” originates from Greek “όρυξ”, which
means “hoe”, “pickaxe”. The words are, of cause, connected with the horns, which resemble these things. The scientific name - “oryx gazella” - was fixed by Carl Linney in 1758.

There are hardly any idioms including oryxes, yet
these animals bear a strong symbolic meaning. Oryxes are extremely hardy animals, able to walk huge distances without water; they’re also very protective of each other. That’s why oryxes were chosen to represent resilience, leadership, freedom and loyalty. Because of these assigned qualities oryxes are portrayed on the blazon of Namibia, and many other countries.

Oryx is mentioned in a rather famous novel
“Oryx and Crake” by Margaret Atwood. There, Oryx is the nickname of an important heroine, a mysterious woman from South-East Asia.

The most known saying about an oryx is
as follows: “Oryxes are unicorns of the desert”. You see, many years ago, when people believed in magic, a unicorn’s horn was a most desirable object, as it was assigned to have healing powers and trusted to bring its lucky owner an eternal life.
A live unicorn was never discovered; but when zealous searchers found oryxes’ graveyards, they took oryxes’ skeletons for unicorns’ skeletons, because of oryxes’ horns!
So, centuries later, those fruitless quests brought on the birth of the saying – “Oryxes are unicorns of the deserts”.

As oryxes live in the deserts, they’ve become
quite indispensable to local tribes. Indeed, to those people who inhabit the hostile sands, oryx is a blessing. Oryxes give meat to eat and skin to wear, oryxes provide sharp horns for superb spears; hard skin from oryxes’ bosoms can be used as horseshoes, and to great effect! Could you imagine that one? Definitely not!

So, why have I chosen oryx of all
words? Because lots of us aren’t even aware of their existence. I wanted to influence that fact a bit, and tell the story of a gorgeous animal that every day struggles for life, though being quite extinct, and helps desperate people to survive. Despite being followed by hunters, hot sandy storms, thirst and hunger, oryxes still go on to go through, proving they are worthy to symbolize what they are said to. At times they can be kinder to each other than we are towards our fellow humans. So let’s try to develop the qualities oryxes represent.
… And let’s stop shooting them for fun.
