` 1.The Transbaikalian Old Believers constitute

a colorful, centuries-old community of the Russian people. Their history is closely connected to the Great Schism within the Russian Orthodox Church in the mid-seventeenth century, during the reign of the Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich.
The Old Believers were that part of the Russian population that refused to accept new forms, continued to practice old church rituals and use uncorrected prayer books. For that, they were persecuted.
2. For centuries, the Old Believers have been keeping their customs, mores, and the faith of their ancestors, isolating themselves from the local population. Because of their religious, ethical and ethnic specificities, the Semeiskie have preserved quite a few attractive features: strong moral convictions, a cult of family and a respect for elders, an enviable work ethic. The peculiarity of this people’s culture was not formed overnight. It origins go back to old Russia. Some of the material culture, including cattle-breeding techniques, were borrowed from the Buryat natives.
The cleanliness of the Semeiskii domicile, remarked upon by many researchers, is closely connected to their notions of beauty.
The Semeiskie are very of singing. Their long-winding songs reveal certain peculiar features – multi-vocal performance and the use of intra-vocal modulations.
3. The Semeiskie’s clothing stands out for its bright colors, neatness, woven headwear and pinafores resembling the clothes of Russian peasant women from central Russia.
Faithful to old ways of life and traditional religious beliefs, the Semeiskie preserved old-fashioned folk costumes for a long time. The Semeiskie’s clothing was a variation on the Russian folk costume which was different in certain details from the Siberian clothing and resembled the clothing of two other Old Believer groups that had settled in the Altai. The most essential differences of the Semeiskie’s set of clothes were women’s headwear and the straight pinafore that was not typical of East Siberian residents.

was a must for housewives. In the past semeiskie were very much afraid of infection. They kept spare kitchen utensils for strangers and uninvited guests. After giving some water to a stranger or treating him to a meal the hostess thoroughly washed up, scrubbed the wooden plates and cups with sand or ashes, rinsed, scalded, dried them and placed them apart from the kitchen utensils used to protect families from contagious diseases, infections and epidemics.
There was an icon corner in the house. There was a bed decorated with traceries and carving at the entrance in the corner. There was a big Russian stove with the front covered with drawings of birds and flowers in the opposite corner.
Country life required various kinds of work: coopers made barrels, saddlers made and repaired harness, masters made carts, sleighs, winnowing machines, harrows, pitchforks, rakes. Needlewomen made homespun carpets , rugs and doormats.
Simple customs of old believers were rooted in their openness and trustfulness. Many customs were borrowed from Buryats living nearby.
5.Old believers’ cuisine consisted of fatty food, eaten mostly during the Period from Christmas to Shrovetide and lenten fare eaten when fasting. Rye and white bread was the chief foodstuff. Potatoes, cabbage and other vegetables were consumed in quantities, especially in autumn and winter. When not fasting, old believers consumed lamb, pork, the meat of wild goat. On Wednesdays and Fridays, which were considered fasting days, old believers had frugal meals: bread, farinaceous food, mashed potatoes, cabbage, cabbage soup, «botvinia» (cold soup of fish, pot-herbs and kvass), kissel (a sweet drink resembling thin jelly), various cooked cereals.
6. The originality of the Semeiskie’s culture is fully reflected in their architecture. In a row of Siberian dwellings, even an unexperienced observer would notice the special look of the picteresque Old Believer vilagges. There are old painted houses with high fences, decorations on the windows. Houses are situated close to taiga and watermelons, which are covered by various flowers and grass, ive trees. Nowadays Semeiskie live in Bichursky district, Muhorshibirsky, Tarbagataysky districts of Buryat republic.
