I went to live in Sherwood forest in Nottinghamshire after I was outlawed. Do you know how it happened to me? At the age of fifteen, I defended myself against fifteen foresters who refused to pay the 20 marks they promised me if I could outshoot them. I shot some of the King’s prized deer to feed my starving family. I understood that if the King finds out what I have done he’ll put me in jail. So, the forest became my home.
I am a skilled archer and a master of disguise. Both talents helped me outwit my enemy, the Sheriff of Nottingham. I’ve met a lot of really good, kind and brave men who became outlaw and had to hide in forests as me because they only wanted to feed their families killing the King’s animals or they didn’t have enough money to pay the rich men for houses. I decided to make a group of outlaws and called it “Merry men”. They chose me as their leader. We started to take money from the nobles who stole it from the poor and gave it back to the poor.
