United States in 1835. His father was an unsuccessful lawyer. The family seldom lived more than a year or two in the same town. That is why the future writer did not even finish secondary school. He went to work at the age of 12.
For two years he worked for his elder brother’s small newspaper both as a printer and reporter.
In 1857 he became a pilot on the Mississipi river. He continued to write.
In 1876 he wrote «The Adventures of Tom Sawyer». The book was read by everybody, by the young and old and was translated into nearly every language in the world. «The Adventures of Tom Sawyer» was such a success that in 1884 he wrote «The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn», and then «Tom Sawyer Abroad» and «Tom Sawyer the Detective» in 1896. There were many other books written by Mark Twain. But his novels about Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn brought him world fame. Mark Twain’s real name was Sammuel Clemens. He took his penname from the words «to mark» and «twain» which were used by leadsmen on the steamboats to mark the depth of two fathoms.
Mark Twain’s stories enjoy widespread popularity. His characters are always well-drawn, his stories are true-to-life and the plots of his stories are skilfullybuilt up.
Many years have passed since Mark Twain’s death, but even now we enjoy reading his works. Besides being a humorist, Mark Twain is also a realist — the author of biting satires and bitterly critical pages revealing a good deal of the truth about American way of life.

During World War I Agatha Christie worked as a hospital nurse. She liked it very much. First time she got married on Christmas Day (in 1914). Her husband Archibald Christie was an army officer. Five years later Agatha gave birth to their daughter Rosalind. This was the time when she started her career as a writer. In 1920 Agatha Christie published her first detective novel “The mysterious affair at Styles”.
In 1926 Agatha’s mother died, and soon after that her husband fell in love with another woman and asked for a divorce. In December 1926 Agatha Christie disappeared. She left a letter where she wrote that she was heading to Yorkshire. Nothing was known about her for 11 days. She didn’t explain her disappearance. In 1928 Archibald and Agatha divorced.
In 1930 Agatha Christie went to Iraq. During that journey she met her future husband archaeologist Max Mallowan. Agatha Christie’s second husband was 15 years younger than her. They travelled together a lot. Agatha accompanied him on his trips to Iraq and Syria. Christie often used those settings for her new novels.
In 1971 her health became worse. There is an opinion that Agatha Christie suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, she kept on writing. Agatha Christie died on 12 January 1976 at her home in Wallingford (Oxfordshire).
Christie published more than 60 detective novels, 6 psychological novels and 19 story collections. Her 16 plays have been staged in London.

Those days there were not a lot of theatres in towns and actors and actresses had to travel moving from one place to another with their shows. Sometimes they visited Stratford-on-Avon. William liked to watch them playing. He got fond of their profession and he decided to become an actor.
He went to London and there he became an actor. At that time he began to write plays too. Shakespeare was at the same time an actor and a playwright. In his works he reflected events of his contemporaries' life. His plays were staged in many theatres, translated into many foreign languages. That made Shakespeare a very popular man.
Most famous of his plays are Othello, King Lear, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet. They are still popular and you can watch his .plays in almost any country of the world. He produced thirty seven plays at all. He had connections with the best English theatres for about 25 years.
William Shakespeare wrote also a lot of poetry including his unbeaten sonnets. There are numerous songs written with his poems. He is still most often published author of the world and well known among people. We do not know much about his life. We can only guess what kind of man he was analyzing the legends and a few documents of the time.
Shakespeare died in 1616, but millions people today still admire his plays.

Later he became a sailor; during some time he wandered vrith the unemployed. For a year he attended the Oakland High school and spent a semester at the University of California, but as he had no money he had to stop his studies and went to work again.
This time it was a laundry. In 1897 he went to the Klondike as a gold miner. His first short story was published in 1898.
Some of the difficulties he met during the first years of his literary work are described in his novel "Martin Eden".
During the sixteen years of his literary career Jack London published about fifty books: short stories, novels and essays. In his best stories London described the severe life and struggle of people against nature. He died at the age of forty in 1916.
